JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF INDONESIA NAMED FINALIST FOR INTERNATIONAL METLIFE FOUNDATION AWARD

JA of Indonesia is one of 12 global finalists for $25,000 award recognizing innovation and entrepreneurial spirit

Prestasi Junior Indonesia has been named one of 12 finalists for the 2010 MetLife Foundation Entrepreneurial Awards. The winners will be announced by MetLife Foundation at Junior Achievement’s National Leadership Conference in Minneapolis on July 21. Each winner will receive a cash award of US $25,000 to expand its work, and Junior Achievement will share the best practices throughout the entire JA organization.

The MetLife Foundation Entrepreneurial Award is in its tenth year. Through the program, MetLife Foundation and JA Worldwide® have awarded more than US $1.4 million to JA offices around the world that demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and innovation in achieving sustainable results for JA’s primary stakeholders—students, schools, volunteers, and donors. MetLife made its first contribution to JA in 1972, and the partnership has grown to include major contributions from MetLife Foundation and the engagement of MetLife associates as local volunteers and board members.

“Innovation and entrepreneurial thinking and action are key concepts of Junior Achievement’s curricula. We ‘practice what we preach’ by driving and rewarding positive results in our organization which leverage these essential components of our brand,” said Sean C. Rush, President and Chief Executive Officer, JA Worldwide. “The finalists for this year’s awards provide strong role models in demonstrating leadership and creative thinking—skills that JA imparts to millions of students around the world every day.”

Robert Gardiner, Director of Junior Achievement of Indonesia, added, “The board and staff of Junior Achievement of Indonesia are thrilled to be selected as a finalist for the 2010 MetLife Foundation Entrepreneurial Award. We strongly believe in infusing our core curriculum concepts—innovation and entrepreneurship—into our organizational practices, and are grateful to MetLife Foundation for their incredible support of Junior Achievement and for their recognition of the important role that innovation plays in today’s business environment.”

Prestasi Junior Indonesia has operated a pilot program for the Hearing Impaired at SLB Santi Rama with the support of the Mei Lin Foundation. The MetLife Foundation support will be used to expand this initiative into more SLB’s in Jakarta and Surabaya.

The twelve finalists were selected from 66 proposals from more than 40 JA operations around the world. A panel of judges, including JA Worldwide board members and a MetLife Foundation representative, selected the winners.

THE JA TITAN COMPETITION IS HELD IN WEST JAVA

Mr. Fiky M Furqon, CPS Deployment Champion & 6 Sigma Master Black Belt, Asia-Pacific Operation, PT. Caterpillar Indonesia gave a speech during the opening ceremony.

Mr. Raymond Lukas of Bank Mayapada, one of the event's sponsors, also gave an opening speech.

Students from the Century Entrepreneurship Center at the Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) staged the JA TITAN Business Simulation Competition on their campus during Sunday 6 June. This was a culmination of an extensive program of training by IPB volunteers who visited ten schools in West Java over a period of six weeks.

With the support of both the Caterpillar Foundation and Bank Mayapada, the Century students worked with approximately 500 students in the region. They were able to select the three best teams from each school and invite them to the campus for a full day’s competition using software directly from the JA Worldwide server in Colorado.

The Caterpillar Foundation and Bank Mayapada provided funding for the initiative and wren present at the campus during the competition. Without their support hundreds of young people would not have had the experience of participating in an innovative educational program. These young people now have broadened their horizons and improved their self confidence – better preparing them for success in a global economy.
