May 3, 2019 – A specific skill does not alone facilitate vocational students to find a good job after graduating from school. Vocational school graduates have the lowest level of labor absorption compared to other levels of education. In addition to lack of available employment vacancies, the mismatch of skills between young job seeker and prospective employers also plays an important role in the current youth unemployment crisis in Indonesia. This issue has encouraged Prestasi Junior Indonesia and Marsh & McLennan Companies Indonesia (MMC Indonesia) to provide a work readiness education for vocational school students in Jakarta and Bogor.
A total of 156 students from SMKN 38 Jakarta and SMK Cendekia A.K. Yasmin Bogor had the opportunity to participate in an innovative work readiness program, JA Career Success. Together with 19 volunteers from MMC Indonesia, students gained knowledge about the skills required by the company. They also learned how to solve work-based problems by applying critical thinking, communication, conflict management, creativity and collaboration with team members.
The volunteers also shared practical tips for applying for jobs. Students are encouraged to understand how to arrange various personal information into an attractive and professional resume. Job interview skills are also important things for young job seekers to master. Students identified the do’s and don’ts when facing a job interview by observing the simulations carried out by the volunteers. After that, they practiced with friends with the guidance of volunteers.
This volunteers engagement was a valuable experience for the students. They were able to understand the importance of ensuring their education and skills acquisition remains adaptable and competitive. MMC volunteers were also great motivators through boosting students self- confidence. Prestasi Junior Indonesia are very pleased to be one of the organizations involved in the Global Volunteer Month of Marsh & McLennan Company. In the fourth year of partnership, Prestasi Junior Indonesia and MMC Indonesia continued their commitment to empower the younger generation to pursue their success in the future. Now, the students are much better prepared to compete in the world of work!
