STEAM Education and Teacher Training

Sep 26, 2022 – Bandung was the setting for the STEAM Education and Teacher Training Workshops during the week of 26 September. With the objective of promoting an integration of digital teaching strategies and tools within the teaching of the national curriculum a comprehensive endeavour is currently underway.  Prestasi Junior Indonesia is extremely proud to collaborate with the team from the National Institute of Education (NIE) at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (led by Professor Tang Wee Teo) together with Amazon Web Services in Indonesia in support the upskilling of 100 teachers from 20 schools located in the province of West Java. Over a period of several months a training curriculum has been developed by NIE which assists teachers in integrating digital learning within daily instruction. So, specifically in STEAM focused subjects, teachers are being provided with the knowledge and means to teach using digital strategies and tools which, in turn, provides the impetus for students to become much more familiar with digital technology – to an extent that is becomes ‘normalized’ as part of their learning. AWS have provided the basic hardware for both teachers and students in the 20 schools. This comes in the form of class sets of BBC Micro-bits and Grove Inventor Kits.  Teachers, upon receiving training, are now being asked to augment current lessons with digital components, engaging students in experiential learning, and making these available to their peers. A library of resources will be one of the key outputs of this STEAM Education project and, with it, sustainability as these lessons will remain accessible to others not only in West Java Province but elsewhere in Indonesia. Throughout the implementation of this initiative we have received support from the Education Authorities of West Java – extremely important as, without it, we would not be able to engage with schools and mobilize teachers.
